Ginsberg Center: Michigan Active Citizens Alternative Spring Break (MAC-ASB) Site Leader

Overview

Michigan Active Citizens: Alternative Spring Break (MAC-ASB) thrives on the hard work, ideas, and energy of the students involved. As a member of MAC-ASB, there will be a year-long education process before engaging in service during the week of spring break. We place a strong emphasis on respectful engagement. Throughout the year, Site Leaders will learn about active citizenship through facilitating dialogues. We work alongside communities to understand social justice issues.

Successful MAC-ASB site leaders guide their teams in learning and reflection and effectively manage day-to-day tasks such as communication with site contacts and fundraising. Their work begins in the fall and continues post-break as site leaders and their groups reorient to campus. Site Leaders attend a mandatory retreat and regular meetings to help build leadership and facilitation skills.

Eligibility

Any enrolled U-M Ann Arbor student is eligible to apply. Experience with alternative breaks is not required.

Costs

The non-refundable participation fee for MAC-ASB is $150. Fee waivers are available for students with demonstrated financial need, and applications will be available in November. See the M-Compass MAC-ASB Fee Waiver web page for more information and a link to apply.

Each site is also responsible for fundraising $1,000 to pay for trip and program expenses. This helps keep non-refundable fees low.

Application Procedures

The Site Leader Application for the upcoming academic year opens on August 28, 2023. Interviews of Site Leaders with Lead Team members will take place late September through early October. Site Leaders will be selected in early October.

Dates & Deadlines

Accepted Site Leaders commit to the program in early October. Tangible responsibilities and work will begin once accepted and will end with Re-Orientation post-spring break in March. MAC-ASB’s Lead Team knows how busy passionate and engaged student leaders often are, so we chose this year to intentionally limit the number of Education and Training sessions Site Leaders are expected to attend. This means that Site Leaders’ attendance at each in-person Education and Training session is critical and mandatory for adequate site preparation.
