Step-by-step instructions for using M-Compass to search and apply for programs

M-Compass home page

M-Compass is the University of Michigan’s campus-wide system for education abroad opportunities. From group study abroad led by U-M faculty members to highly individualized internship and service-based experiences, M-Compass can help you find the experience that’s right for you.

There are many different ways to search for programs in M-Compass! You can filter by term, location, eligibility, academic level and more. Use the instructions below to locate programs that interest you.

The 'Search All Programs' button opens the Search for Programs & Funding page:

Using Search Filters

Select from available filters to locate programs of interest:
 
  • Terms
  • Countries
  • Program Types
  • Offered by
  • Level of study
  • College/School Eligibility
  • Type of Experience
  • Type of Funding
  • Foreign Language Required

Search by Terms

The program term indicates when travel will take place, such as during the full academic year (fall + winter semester) or during the spring/summer term (May-August). The term for scholarship and funding program is typically when the awarded funds may be used.

Search by Countries

Select one or more countries from the pick-list to narrow results to a specific country. If no countries are selected, then all countries will be included in the search results.

Search by Program Type

There are 3 main program types in M-Compass: Outgoing, Incoming, and Scholarship. The default program type is Outgoing. If nothing is selected in the Program Type filter, all Outgoing programs will be shown.

Search by Offered by

To find programs offered by a particular office, such as CGIS, Nursing or Ross, select an office in the Offered by field.

Search by Level of Study

To find programs available to a specific academic level, such as graduate students, select from Level of Study. If nothing is selected in this filter, all levels will be shown.

Search by College/School Eligibility

To find programs available to specific majors, such as Art & Design, select from College/School Eligibility. If nothing is selected in this filter, all majors will be shown.

Search by Type of Experience

To find programs by type, such as internship, research, or study, select from Type of Experience. If nothing is selected in this filter, all types of experiences will be shown.

Search by Type of Funding

This filter is applicable only to Scholarship and Funding programs. When the Program Type filter is set to 'Scholarship', use this filter to find funding for specific types of experiences, such as for study abroad. If nothing is selected, all types of funding will be shown.*

*Must have Program Type set to Scholarship

Search by Foreign Language Required

This filter is applicable only to Outgoing study abroad programs. To find programs that have a language requirement, set this filter to 'Yes'.

Search Bar

The search bar is a keyword search field can be used with or without filters. Enter a keyword, such as 'Engineering' or 'Spain' in the search field locate programs by name or location. Note that keyword searches do not include Funding programs.

The 'Guided Program Search' button opens the Guided Program Search menu, which has a series of questions designed to assist you in searching M-Compass program catalog for programs that meet your interests and eligibility:

After completing the guided questions, view the results by clicking on the 'View Guide Results' button:

Up to 20 matching programs will be randomly listed in the results. Hover over a tile to view the program overview, or click on the tile to preview the program brochure.

Directly below the list of programs is a list of up to 20 programs with an upcoming application deadline.

Note: Guide results and Upcoming Deadlines are limited to a maximum of 20 programs. To find all matching programs, you can use the #SearchAllProgramsSearch All Programs option.

Use the Search Programs menu to view opportunities for undergraduate students, graduate students, or programs offered by a specific office such as CGIS:

To locate funding opportunities such as scholarships, grants, and fellowships, you can navigate to the Search Funding menu:

As noted in Search by Program Type and Search by Type of Funding, you can also use the Search Programs filters to get a list of scholarship and funding programs:

View Program Brochure

After searching for a program, you can learn more about it and start an application. Click on a program tile in the search results to open the program brochure page. Use the scroller to view each section, such as who is eligible, program cost, and application deadlines. When a program is currently accepting applications, an 'Apply Now' button will be shown in the Overview section:

Apply to a Program

Once you apply, M-Compass asks you to log in. Then, you are taken directly to your new application. Instructions for completing the application are shown and can be collapsed from view. Click the 'Get Started!' button to begin completing items on your application checklist:

You can save your application and return to M-Compass later to finish and submit for review. Once all items are completed, you will be prompted to submit your application. Submit the application to finalize it and send to the sponsoring office to review:

You won't receive an email when your application is submitted, but you will see a note on your checklist that your application is complete and has been submitted:
